First Time that More Than 1/3 of Sun's Energy is Converted to Electricity

Mary Farrell - Tuesday, February 07, 2012

Solar is such an abundant and clean energy source, but it's been so hard to efficiently collect.  Finally, the technology has been developed to break the 30%  mark.  Solar cell maker Semprius has done it using a combination of lenses to intensify the light, and super sensitive solar panels.  Although it may take a while for these panels to trickle down to Home Depot level for all of us, it's still great news. Read more...

"Natural" doesnt equal "organic"

Mary Farrell - Monday, January 30, 2012

For all of us truly working in, living and promoting organics, greenwashing can be annoying.  Terms like "natural" and "sustaibable" might be marketed to mean the same thing as "organic," but they are not.  This leaves the underinformed consumer confused over price disparities and value.  To set the record straight, anything officially labeled "organic" has to adhere to certain US or international standards, which insures an inherent value.  Maya Rodale discusses this in her blog post, and her conclusion is right.  We need to continue to educate the public about what organic means and build more support around one, fully-understood term. Read more...

Mary Farrell - Thursday, January 26, 2012

Two men, Simon Peers, a textile designer and researcher and Nicholas Godley, an entrepreneur, took on a project to create artistic textiles made out of spider silk.  Living in Madagascar, they worked with a silk factory to collect, spin and weave the fiber.  Their work spanned over eight years and culminated in a magnificent shawl and extravagant cape, now on display at London's Victoria & Albert Museum.   Read more...

Global Emergency- Online petition to save the bees

Mary Farrell - Monday, January 16, 2012
Quietly, globally, billions of bees are dying, threatening our crops and food. But a global ban of one group of pesticides could save bees from extinction.

Four European countries have begun banning these poisons, and some bee populations are recovering. But chemical companies are lobbying hard to keep all killer pesticides on the market. A global outcry now for a ban in the US and EU, where debate is raging, could provoke a total ban and a ripple effect around the world.

Let’s build a giant global buzz calling for these dangerous chemicals to be outlawed in the US and EU until and unless they are proved to be safe. Sign the petition to save bees and our crops and send this to everyone:
